Clarifile Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 10, 2026
Clarifile helps you scan, translate, and understand documents. This policy explains what information Clarifile collects, how it is used, and how you can delete your account and data.
Information We Collect
Depending on how you use Clarifile, we may process or store the following information:
- Account information, such as your email address and user identifier.
- Subscription status and purchase history needed to provide paid features.
- Document images, imported files, extracted text, translations, document titles, and optional AI interpretation results.
- Usage records such as monthly scan, OCR, translation, storage, and quota counters.
- Technical information needed to authenticate requests, secure the service, and operate cloud features.
Camera and Photo Library
Clarifile asks for camera access so you can scan documents. It may also ask for photo library or file access so you can import document images or PDFs. Document content is collected from camera scans, photo library and file imports, and text that you manually correct before translation. Document images and extracted text may contain personal information from the documents you choose to process.
How Documents Are Processed
Clarifile uses on-device OCR first where available. If OCR quality is low, or if you request translation or AI interpretation, document images or text may be sent through secure server functions to service providers for processing.
Third-Party AI and Translation Processing
Before Clarifile uses third-party AI or translation processing, the app asks you to actively agree to a data-sharing disclosure. If you do not agree, Clarifile does not send your document content to these providers and the affected processing features cannot be used.
Clarifile may send the following document content only to provide a feature you request:
- Document images from camera scans, photo library imports, or PDF imports may be sent to OpenAI for cloud OCR when on-device text recognition is not reliable.
- Extracted document text, including text you manually correct, may be sent to DeepL or Google Cloud Translation to create a translation.
- Original text, translated text, document type, and selected language may be sent to OpenAI to generate an optional Premium AI interpretation.
Clarifile does not send filenames or Clarifile user identifiers to OpenAI, DeepL, or Google Cloud Translation in these provider requests. These providers process document content as service providers for OCR, translation, and interpretation and are required to protect personal data under applicable data-protection terms or equivalent safeguards.
Free and Premium Storage
On the free plan, saved documents are stored on your device. OCR and translation may still require network processing. Premium users may back up document images, extracted text, translations, and interpretations to their Clarifile cloud account for cross-device access.
Service Providers
Clarifile uses third-party service providers to operate the app:
- Supabase for authentication, database, storage, server functions, usage records, and cloud document backup.
- OpenAI for document-image cloud OCR fallback and optional AI interpretation of original and translated document text.
- DeepL and Google Cloud Translation for translation of extracted or manually corrected document text.
- RevenueCat, Apple, and Google for subscription status and purchase processing.
Some service providers, including OpenAI and RevenueCat, process data in the United States. Transfers are made under standard contractual clauses or other lawful transfer mechanisms.
How We Use Information
We use information to provide authentication, OCR, translation, AI interpretation, document storage, subscription access, account deletion, quota enforcement, service reliability, and customer support. We do not sell your personal information.
We process information as needed to provide the Clarifile service you request. Camera and file access depend on the permissions you grant in your device settings. Third-party AI and translation processing is performed only after you actively agree to the in-app data-sharing disclosure.
Data Retention and Deletion
You can delete your Clarifile account from Settings in the app. Account deletion removes your Clarifile cloud documents, stored files, subscription metadata, usage data, and local cached Clarifile documents, then signs you out. Some payment records may remain with Apple, Google, RevenueCat, or other processors as required for billing, tax, fraud prevention, and legal compliance.
Security
Clarifile uses authentication, access controls, and secure transport to protect data. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so only scan or upload documents you are comfortable processing through the app.
Children
Clarifile is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided personal information, contact us at support@clarifile.app and we will delete it.
Your Choices
You can choose not to grant camera or file access, but scanning and import features may not work. You may decline the third-party AI and translation disclosure; Clarifile will then prevent document content from being sent for cloud OCR, translation, or AI interpretation. You can review your recorded choice from the AI data sharing screen in Settings. You can manage subscriptions through Apple App Store or Google Play account settings. You can request help or data questions through support.
We will update the date at the top of this page when material changes are made.
